The increased dependence on the Internet for a wide variety of daily transactions causes a corresponding loss in privacy for many users, as virtually all websites collect data from users directly or indirectly while performing business with them. In this thesis we have used a web crawler named “iWatch” which serves as an instrument to collect basic statistics on the state of privacy, security, and data-collection practices on the web. Furthermore, a relatively high degree of formality in key areas of government activities encourages the application of Semantic Web concepts.This diploma thesis presents an approach for semi-automatically supporting the design and execution of data flows within the composition of semantically described Web services that are making use of different ontologies and data representations. The approach includes a rule-based mechanism for user-transparent mediation between ontologies. In order to validate the approach, a prototypical cross-ontology Semantic Web service composition tool has been implemented to be used in eGovernment scenarios spanning multiple application domains.The essence of this thesis was presented at the European Semantic Web Conference 2006 at the Workshop on eGovernment and Semantic Web and is published in the paper.

"A General Framework for Evolution and Reactivity in the Semantic Web" was designed for bridging the gap torn apart by the heterogeneity. This framework is based on Event-Condition-Action (ECA) rules. With the release of version 10g Oracle has enhanced its database software by adding a Rules Manager package that allows the user to define and manage ECA rules. In this book, the features of the Oracle Rules Manager are examined and it is analysed how and to what extent the Rules Manager can function as a domain node in the ECA Framework for the Semantic Web.

  • To better facilitate health information dissemination, using flexible ways to represent, query and visualize health data becomes increasingly important. Semantic Web technologies, which provide a common framework by allowing data to be shared and reused between applications, can be applied to the management of health data. Linked open data - a new semantic web standard to publish and link heterogeneous data- allows not only human, but also machine to browse data. Through a use case of WHO data, we develop a linked data based health information representation, querying and visualization system. Through out the book, we discussed how to develop such systems using RDF and triple stores, how to write codes for visualization and retrieval. For users who are not familiar with SPARQL queries, we show how to develop and use a search engine interface. From this work we can depict that current linked open data technologies have a big potential to represent heterogeneous health data in a flexible and reusable manner. While certain practical topics-such as interoperability, etc.-have at least partially been addressed, scalability and expressivity issues regarding the utilisation of multimedia metadata on the Semantic Web are still widely neglected. However, existing Web (2.0) applications handling millions of multimedia assets are starting to take advantage of Semantic Web technologies. This work contributes to design decisions regarding scalable and smart multimedia applications on the Semantic Web. Based on an analysis of practical issues-stemming from diverse projects and activities the author has participated in over the past four years-three areas have been identified, namely (i) performance and scalability issues on the data access level, (ii) the effective and efficient representation of multimedia content descriptions, and (iii) the deployment of multimedia metadata on the Semantic Web. The three research areas have as its common base the trade-off between expressivity and scalability. We present our findings regarding scalable, yet expressive Semantic Web multimedia applications in a number of practical settings and discuss future directions, such as interlinking multimedia.

  • Today's offered services in the World Wide Web increasingly rely on the disclosure of private user information. Service providers' appetite for personal user data, however, is accompanied by growing privacy implications for Internet users. Targeting the rising privacy concerns of users, privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) emerged. One goal of these technologies is the provision of tools that facilitate more informed decisions about personal data disclosures. Unfortunately, available PET solutions are used by only a small fraction of Internet users. A major reason for the low acceptance of PETs is their lack of usability. Most PET approaches rely on the cooperation of service providers that do not voluntarily adopt privacy components in their service infrastructures.Addressing the weaknesses of existing PETs, this book introduces a user-centric privacy architecture that facilitates a provider-independent exchange of privacy-related information about service providers. This capability is achieved by a privacy community, an open information source within the proposed privacy architecture. A Wikipedia-like Web front-end enables collaborative maintenance of service provider information including multiple ratings, experiences and data handling practices.In addition to the collaborative privacy community, the introduced privacy architecture contains three usable PET components on the user side that support users before, during and after the disclosure of personal data.   • Ontology is the explicit, formal specification of shared conceptualization in a domain. It is one of the formal ways to represent knowledge. Semantically linking across ontologies is the basic backbone to ensure interoperability between agents or services. Moreover, ontology matching becomes a central issue, when building a Semantic Web, also known as “web of data”. With the development of social networking web sites and linked data, huge amount of data is published on the web, which not only imposes new technology challenges over conventional ontology matching algorithms, but also demands new techniques for automatic instance level matching to support discovery and management of different individual descriptions referring to same real world object.   • Knowledge management has been considered in the past decades applying techniques to cope with organizing data, information and knowledge. It implements methods to manage knowledge on papers as well as digital ones. Meanwhile, birth of the World Wide Web despite all of its advantages has initiated a number of issues for the researchers due to massiveness of the data on the Web. Therefore, the new knowledge engineering techniques must be automated to save time and effort of man power with considering the Web with a shared understanding of the data among all of its components. To achieve accurate and integrated definition of all available data, machines need to make a unique understanding of all discrete data sources. This book is aimed at presenting existing Measures of Semantic Similarity for resolving foregoing issue. These measures are also useful in tasks such as text categorizing, machine translation and information retrieval. Furthermore, this book introduces two new normalized functions for measuring semantic similarity between two concepts based on first and second order context and information content vectors computed from MEDLINE as the biomedical corpus, UMLS and WordNet.

Sharing of these data is proved to be beneficial for data mining application. Since data mining often involves data that contains personally identifiable information and therefore releasing such data may result in privacy breaches. On one hand such data is an important asset to business decision making by analyzing it. On the other hand data privacy concerns may prevent data owners from sharing information for data analysis. In order to share data while preserving privacy, data owner must come up with a solution which achieves the dual goal of privacy preservation as well as accuracy of data mining task mainly clustering and classification. Existing techniques for privacy preserving data mining is designed for traditional static data sets and are not suitable for data streams. Privacy preserving data stream mining is an emerging research area in the field of privacy aware data mining.

The annotation is used to build a concrete implementation of a generic processing framework translating the annotation of a service into rules to be integrated into an OWL knowledge base rule engine.The realization is done for the Jena Semantic Web Framework, an open source library for Semantic Web application for the Java language. The realization is designed as an add-on to Jena which integrates service calls in such a way that service invocation is transparent to applications building on Jena.A discussion on optimizations, both implemented ones and realizable but not implemented ones is included. They can serve as starting points for moving the implementation from a proof of concept status to real world usability.   • The semantic approach to data storage, management and extraction is a promising concept that has constantly been gaining importance during the past years. However, the visualization of semantic data systems as well as the functionalities of their interfaces still contain some obstacles for both, the interaction designer and the interacting user. In order to accommodate to those obstacles, the interaction designer has to come up with an intuitive and efficient user interface design, introducing inexperienced users to data representation and extraction in a semantic environment. The intention of this work is to provide an overview over the disciplines of Human Computer Interaction and Interaction Design, with the intention to mediate the essential human-based and technical processes influencing the design of interaction, with a focus on the organisation and representation of unstructured, semantically rich data.

  • The 'Semantic Web mechanisms in Cloud Environment' is about re-implementing of Virtual Private Ontology Server (VPOS); a middleware software with focus on ontologies. VPOS is offering a smart way to its users how to access relevant parts of ontology according to their context. The user context can be expertise level, experience level, or job position in a hierarchy structure. Instead of having numerous numbers of ontologies associated to different user contexts, VPOS keeps only one ontology but offers sub-ontologies to users on the basis of their context. VPOS has issues regarding scalability and maintainability which are addressed within this book, first by upgrading the architecture of application using Apache Jena framework to address scalability issue and then moving to SAP HANA cloud addressing maintainability issues. The final production of the project would be Cloud-VPOS which is an application made to deal with semantic web mechanisms and function over cloud platform. Cloud-VPOS would be an application where semantic web meets cloud computing by employing semantic web mechanisms as cloud services.

  • World Wide Web (WWW) is a collection of interconnected Web pages accessed via Internet offering information and services from all over the world. There is an explosive growth of information in the Web that poses a challenge to Web users to extract essential knowledge from it. Web Mining is a process of extracting knowledge from WWW using Data mining Techniques. The Web contains Semistructured data like Web pages and Web logs. Mining of Semistructured data involves, (i) extraction of required information from the Deep Web which is not accessible to the search engines, (ii) careful exploitation of extracted data for enhancing the services offered by Web tools such as finding synonyms for search keywords and (iii) ranking the Web pages obtained from the results. To improve the overall performance of the Web, Web logs are mined to derive patterns to predict user behaviour. These patterns can be analysed and used for many applications such as generation of prefetching rules, construction of community Web directories for personalization. These techniques improve availability of web objects, reduce latency and utilize bandwidth efficiently in accessing the Internet.
